EXAMINATION BODIES KILL DEAF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

For many years, we Deaf and hard of hearing enrolled and passed out from High School or Secondary schools, West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO) and Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) are aware and they continue to force us the Deaf to take ORAL ENGLISH Examination, that’s really WEIRD AND
CRAZY for this 21st century.

We Deaf use Sign Language and it has nothing to do with ORAL or PRONUNCIATION. Sign Language is another language just as English and French are different languages. For instance, in sign language, a word like “during and while” have the same sign language (Nigerian Sign Language) but a different meaning while a word like “taught” and thought” have the same pronunciation but different meaning and while they are also signed differently in sign language.  To learn more about Sign Language, check this out: The Sign Language Systems and Very Interesting facts about Sign Language.

With such a situation, this often leads Deaf students to low performance in English Language but the question is: WHO IS TO BLAME? (You can drop your comments) THE GOVERNMENT.

They are to be blamed and should be ready to accept the rot in the education sectors in Nigeria. Its high time the examination bodies such as WAEC, NECO and JAMB are educated and start excluding the Deaf from Oral English Exams. (you can share your comments).
